Without doubt, effective keyword research is the most important single area of SEO. If you do not carry out this stage of the process then you will be unable to position your site in front of targeted visitors that are going to buy from you.
As the first step in any SEO campaign, we carry out extensive keyword research in order to determine the keywords with the best traffic that will convert into REAL highly qualified visitors for your website. We use several sources to gather this information including the "Google Keyword Tool". The important things to remember about this tool, are to firstly sign into your account as this is the only way to see all the available keywords, and secondly to click the [Exact match] box on the left hand side, as otherwise you will be shown the search volume for every search that contains the keywords you entered, which will be much higher, and therefore misleading. We are looking for high volume exact match keywords for SEO purposes.

SEO - Competitor Site Analysis
Once you have your keyword list, you need to have a look at how easy, or difficult each one is going to be to achieve for your website. A few things to bear in mind here, are that you will not be comparing like with like. When we analyse competitor sites, we have to allow for factors such as the design, layout, overall size of the site in terms of indexed pages, the site URL (Is it keyword rich?), as well as many other factors that allow us to determine the viability of specific keywords or phrases.
To start this SEO analysis process, first type one of your chosen keywords into Google. Looking through the top ten results, you ideally want to find a site similar to yours, for example, if your site URL is www.petejoneslimited.co.uk, you need to find a similar non keyword rich URL to compare your self to. Once we have found a similar site at or near the top of Google, we then analyse everything we can about that site, including, their back-links; where the back-links come from, keyword density, link juice, volume, variety, and many other optimisation metrics. We do this for several websites for each keyword, in order to establish a pattern for the competitiveness of the niche.
Once we have all the SEO data for the keywords we want to target, then we can make some educated decisions based on specifics and produce a time line and cost plan for achieving top Google rankings for those terms.

Once we have developed a keyword list, we need to apply these keywords to your website pages. This process is known as on-page SEO. It is important to include the necessary keywords within the key areas of each page that you want to rank for the phrases. These include the page title, META's, page headings etc. It is also very important to have good quality, original content on each page, and to ensure that the keyword density is within specific limits. Too few keywords and the major search engines won't apply enough relevance to your pages, too many keywords and you will be penalised for keyword spamming, which is something to avoid.
Each of your pages should be set up for specific keywords, and as you don't want your pages to compete with one another, it is important to make sure it is clear to the search engines which phrases and keywords you have optimised each page for.

A Blog is a great place to sell special offers, or to provide product info, and search engines love to see them. SEO - Off-Page Search Engine Optimisation
Off-Page search engine optimisation is the process of link building. Links are equivalent to 'votes' for your website and depending on where they are, they carry a different weight, which will aid your site up the rankings further. Google uses Page Rank (PR) to value every website that it knows about, with a value from 0 to 10. There are only a handful of 10's in the world, as they are incredibly powerful websites, so a link from one of them would be very valuable to you...... if only you could get one!
